About Mohs surgery

Mohs Surgery is a highly specialized and effective method of treating skin cancer, particularly basal cell carcinoma of the face. This technique, developed by Dr. Frederic Mohs in the 1930s, involves removing skin cancers layer by layer, examining each layer under a microscope until all cancer cells are gone. This allows for maximum preservation of healthy skin and reduces the risk of recurrence, which is particularly important for skin cancers that occur on sensitive or cosmetically important areas of the face and ears.

Mohs surgery - A surgical method

This is a special type of surgical treatment to completely remove basal cell carcinoma.

The surgical approach differs from conventional surgery in that it involves a full microscopic examination of all the edges around the skin or tissue to be removed. After the operation, which is often performed in several stages, all tumor tissue has been removed thanks to a careful microscopic analysis of the tumor area. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia.

This method is particularly beneficial when you want to preserve as much healthy skin as possible and maximize the chances of curing basal cell carcinoma. Mohs surgery can cure the skin tumor in almost all cases, with only 2-3% recurrence. Other surgical treatments do not cure as often, and the results are even worse if the cancer has been previously operated on.

Mohs surgery should be the first choice for:

  • Primary highly aggressive basal cell carcinoma (type III) of the face.
  • Primary clinically difficult to define moderately aggressive basal cell carcinoma (type II) of the face.
  • Recurrent or non-radical medium to highly aggressive basal cell carcinoma (type II-III) of the face.

Mohs surgery may be considered:

  • Primary clinically well-defined basal cell carcinoma of moderately aggressive type (type II) in surgically very complicated sites such as around the eyes, nose and mouth.
